Exact Sciences buys San Diego biomaterial preservation company

Exact Sciences Corp., the manufacturer of the Cologuard take home colon cancer test, has acquired Biomatrica, a San Diego company that develops and commercializes products to preserve biological materials, including blood and saliva.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Biomatrica will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Exact Sciences and remain in San Diego.

Exact Sciences (Nasdaq: EXAS) plans to use Biomatrica’s technology to support “ongoing and future development” of its own blood-based cancer detection tests. Biomatrica’s products are distributed across the globe with customers that include Waltham, Mass.-based Thermo Fisher Scientific (NYSE: TMO), Switzerland-based Roche, and California based companies GenMark Diagnostics (Nasdaq: GNMK) and Kaiser Permanente.
