Epic Systems Corp. unveils program to expand accessibility to health records

If you go on vacation and break a leg or come down with malaria, it may soon be easier to let the physician who treats you get a glimpse of your health history, if you so desire.

Epic Systems Corp. is coming out with a new feature designed to let patients show their medical records to providers who are not already on Epic’s system — or on any electronic health records system at all — in a one-time release of the data.

The new program, called Share Everywhere, lets patients call up their MyChart health record on their smartphone and, using a one-time access code, the treating physician can get the patient’s health history over the internet. The person’s medical data, lab results and summaries of past medical appointments can be viewed, and the treating physician can write a note back to the patient’s regular health care provider.

“Patients should be able to easily share their health information with anyone they choose, no matter where they are. Share Everywhere now makes this possible,” said Janet Campbell, Epic’s vice president of patient engagement.
